People often ask me, “What exactly is a fractal?”
Simply put a fractal is a mathematically generated
pattern that is reproducible at any magnification or
reduction. I like to think of it in comparison to the
Rocky Mountains where I live. From a distance, you
can see their shape. The points of the peaks. The dips
of the valleys as they repeat ever onward. Their bumpy
and rocky texture. If you move in for a closer look, you
will still see that texture. The rocks and bumps may be
smaller, comprised of many more rocks, but they are
still the same rocks that created the pattern you saw
while further away.
My mathematically based fractal art is created on the computer using specialized
mathematical formulas. Every aspect of the image – shapes, colors, textures, etc., is
controlled by these formulas. As the artist, I control the way the formulas work by
manipulating their parameters to create pleasing works of art. Each piece is comprised
of many different layers which merge together to create the final image. They are then
printed on canvas, watercolor or photographic paper to hang upon your wall to enjoy.
